The Foundation
Three Industry Leaders Break Away to Build Something of Their Own

Harmonix Construction was founded in 1999 by John Farragher, Troy Hunter, and Stephen Hawkes — three ambitious managers and directors who had cut their teeth at Mowlem, one of Britain’s most respected construction firms. Having spent years thriving within a blue-chip environment, the trio shared a vision for a different kind of construction company: one built on craftsmanship, collaboration, and genuine care for its people. Together, they took the leap and set the foundations for what would become Harmonix.
The First Project
A Complex London Basement Build That Defined the Harmonix Standard

The founders’ first opportunity came in the form of a technically demanding basement development in central London, known as the “Third Space.” It was a project that would have tested even established contractors, but Harmonix delivered it with precision and confidence. The successful completion of the Third Space set the tone for everything that followed — a willingness to take on complexity, a commitment to problem-solving, and a reputation for getting difficult jobs done right.
A Lasting Loss
Carrying the Vision Forward After the Passing of Stephen Hawkes

Shortly after the completion of the Third Space project, Harmonix suffered a profound loss with the untimely passing of co-founder Stephen Hawkes. John Farragher and Troy Hunter took on the responsibility of leading the company forward as co-owners, determined to honour Stephen’s memory by building the business the three of them had envisioned together. What followed was two decades of steady growth, shaped by their shared dedication to quality, integrity, and a deep sense of purpose.
Building a Culture
How People-First Leadership Became the Heart of the Business

Under John and Troy’s stewardship, Harmonix grew into a highly respected construction company known for its problem-solving mindset, meticulous attention to design detail, and an unmistakable “can-do” attitude. But what truly set the business apart was its culture. Employee well-being was placed above all else, creating an environment that felt less like a workplace and more like a family. This philosophy fostered remarkable loyalty, long careers, and a generation of professionals who grew up within the company — many joining as graduates and rising to become future leaders.
The Management Buyout
Choosing Legacy Over Sale — Passing the Business to the Next Generation

In 2020, John and Troy were approached with an opportunity to sell the company. Instead, they chose a path that reflected everything Harmonix stood for: a Management Buyout offered to the senior team who had helped build the business. It was a decision rooted in trust, ensuring that Harmonix would continue to be led by people who genuinely live and breathe its values. The transition was seamless, and the new generation of directors stepped forward ready to carry the company into its next chapter.
A New Chapter
Honouring the Founders’ Legacy While Leading Harmonix Forward

Today’s directors bring with them more than 50 years of combined experience and an unwavering connection to the company they now lead. They extend their sincere gratitude to John and Troy for their mentorship, friendship, and the culture they created — a legacy that continues to shape every project Harmonix takes on. Reflecting on their journey, the founders spoke of navigating the 2008 market crash, Brexit, and the challenges of Covid, always crediting the dedication of their staff for carrying the company through. As Harmonix moves forward, that same dedication remains its greatest strength — and the team wishes John and Troy every happiness in whatever comes next, be it consultancy, new ventures, or, dare we say it, retirement.
